An internal examination concerning the Coalition's significant election defeat has placed some responsibility on U. S. President Donald Trump for dissuading voters from supporting Peter Dutton.
Segments of the evaluation were disclosed to Nine newspapers, revealing that Dutton's choice in February to assign an Elon Musk-style position to outspoken Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price negatively impacted the party's campaign.
Dutton's reorganization of the shadow cabinet involved establishing a framework focused on "government efficiency," aiming to address "unproductive expenditure," mirroring the U. S. Department of Government Efficiency.
The report was initiated nearly six months ago and its release was postponed until after the parliament's last session.
Opposition spokeswoman for aged care, Anne Ruston, has not yet reviewed the assessment but stated that the Liberals must confront the realities of their electoral failures.
“We recognize that numerous factors contributed to our poor performance during the election in May this year,” she informed ABC RN on Wednesday.
“We must be frank with ourselves about the reasons behind such a disastrous election outcome so we can reorganize and strengthen our position ahead of the 2028 election. ”
The review is nearing completion. It remains unclear whether it will be entirely released to the public, with the party’s federal executive deliberating on whether to keep sensitive or damaging campaign information confidential.
The long-established Australian Election Study, which has recently reported on the findings from the 2025 election, indicated that Dutton was the least favored candidate for prime minister in its four-decade research span.
“Voters indicated that the leadership traits [Dutton] was notably lacking included inspiration, followed closely by compassion,” stated Ian McAllister, co-author of the study.
He has established his profession by fostering separation, targeting those who are less fortunate, aiming to fracture community bonds, and participating in cultural conflicts.
The research supported by the Australian National University indicated that Labor was perceived as the most effective steward of the economy.
As public opinion shifted against Trump during his initial term, rivals of the election likened Dutton to him throughout the campaigning period.
“I believe he has tarnished his own public image,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated during an interview on ABC's 7.30 in April.

In a significant victory in May, Labor secured 94 out of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives, while the Coalition saw their seats reduced to 43, leading to several months of internal conflicts.

A newly introduced plan to abandon the net zero commitment surfaced alongside speculations about a challenge to the Liberal leadership from conservatives like Andrew Hastie or Angus Taylor.
The next step involves deliberating a new approach to immigration, which will include further behind-the-scenes discussions between the Liberals’ centrist and right-leaning groups.
