‘Insincere’: Kevin Spacey clarifies he isn’t really homeless

Actor Kevin Spacey has turned to social media to clarify that he is not without a home following an interview he gave to a British newspaper that was published with the title: “Homeless, cancelled and singing in Cyprus”.

The article gained immense attention after being featured last week in The Telegraph, with the Oscar-winning actor stating that it led to thousands of messages from people offering him accommodation and checking on his well-being.

“To everyone who reached out, I want to express how truly grateful I am for your kindness… but I feel it would be misleading for me to let you think that I am genuinely homeless in the everyday sense,” he explained.

In an Instagram update on Monday (UK time), Spacey stated that he informed journalist Mick Brown he was “essentially residing in hotels and Airbnbs and following work opportunities, just like when I first began my career”.

“I have been consistently busy with work throughout this year, and for that, I have a lot to appreciate,” he mentioned.

Spacey received Academy Awards for Best Actor for his roles in The Usual Suspects (1996) and American Beauty (2000), and is famously recognized for his portrayal of the cunning politician Francis Underwood in the acclaimed Netflix series House of Cards.

Nonetheless, his career faced significant setbacks in 2017 when a singer and actor accused him of sexual misconduct from an incident that supposedly took place nearly three decades prior.

Several men have since alleged that the 66-year-old engaged in sexual assault or exhibited inappropriate behavior – including Australian actor Guy Pearce, who stated that Spacey harassed him while filming the 1997 movie LA Confidential.

Spacey has rejected all accusations, and in July 2023, a court in London acquitted him of charges of assault against four men following a trial that lasted four weeks.

Recently, he has made efforts to revive his career, and an article in The Telegraph reported on his live performance called Songs and Stories at a nightclub in Cyprus this month.

The venue promoted the event as “a unique opportunity to witness a genuine Hollywood celebrity in his element,” portraying Spacey as possessing “the charm of Sinatra, the humor of Dean Martin. ”

The actor expressed to The Telegraph that his expenditures over the last seven years had been “astronomical,” which resulted in the loss of his home.

In a different interview from last year, he mentioned having to sell his residence and his fears of possibly facing bankruptcy due to his legal fees.

In a video posted on Instagram this week, he referred to Brown as a “fantastic journalist,” but criticized the newspaper for “diminishing” his work “with a deliberately misleading headline. ”

Space recognized that there are many individuals who are genuinely homeless.

“There are numerous people, as everyone knows, who are truly living on the streets or in their vehicles or are in extremely difficult financial circumstances, and I empathize with them,” he stated.

“However, it is evident from the article itself that I do not belong to that group, nor did I intend to imply that I did.”
